In a recent development, Xbox Game Studios had initially set the price of The Outer Worlds 2 at $80, but they faced significant backlash from players, leading the company to rethink this decision.
During an interview, Matt Booty, president of game content and studios at Microsoft, discussed the unsuccessful attempt to increase the game’s price. He emphasized the importance of listening to player feedback and ensuring satisfaction. Booty mentioned, “Our focus is on delivering value to players and adapting to their needs. We are committed to understanding what players want.” He further remarked on the need for the industry to evolve pricing models as players engage with games in new ways.
Nintendo was the first company to launch a standard edition game at the $80 price point with Mario Kart World, which also faced criticism. However, the negative response was somewhat muted, possibly due to its release alongside the Nintendo Switch 2.
Booty continued, stating that monetization strategies are diversifying and that the company would consider customer feedback while maintaining a successful business. As of now, there are no new announcements regarding pricing changes for upcoming content.
The discussion around pricing raises questions about potential future $80 games, with titles like Call of Duty looking like prime candidates. Given the lukewarm response to Call of Duty Black Ops 7, the company has decided against producing back-to-back sequels. Additionally, popular franchises such as Gears of War: E-Day and Fable could also face similar pricing scrutiny, though it remains to be seen if negative feedback will deter players from accepting higher costs in the future.
