The Super Mario Galaxy Film Receives Lower Ratings than Its Predecessor on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has achieved remarkable success, becoming one of the top-grossing animated films in history. While it may not have reached the heights of cinematic brilliance, it struck a chord with fans through its nostalgic charm. However, the upcoming sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, appears to be facing more challenges in gaining a favorable reception.

Recent reviews for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have been released, revealing a considerable decline in ratings on both Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes compared to its predecessor.

The original Super Mario Bros. Movie garnered a score of 46 on Metacritic and 59% on Rotten Tomatoes in 2023. These figures, although not stellar, were relatively better than what The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is receiving. As it prepares for its theatrical release today, its Metacritic score has dropped to a disappointing 37, and it holds a mere 46% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics have not held back in their assessments. Kevin Maher from The Times described the experience as “torturous” and claimed it caused him physical discomfort, ultimately rating the film a 0. Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian echoed this dissatisfaction, stating, “It looks as if humans were trying to reproduce something initially created by AI, resulting in a bland and simplistic product.” He rated it only 2 out of 10.

Conversely, some reviews have been more favorable. Collider rated the film 7 out of 10, with Ross Bonaime noting its charm and humor, while Looper also awarded it a 7/10, as Reuben Baron expressed surprise at how many jokes made him laugh.

Although I have yet to view it myself, I’m inclined to think The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may parallel its predecessor. While it might not be an award contender, its primary purpose seems to be uniting fans of all ages in celebration of the beloved franchise and, naturally, generating substantial box office revenue. I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing my favorite characters on the big screen again!
