Cinderia: Unlocking Playable Characters in This Unique Roguelike
Cinderia offers players an engaging roguelike experience, distinguished by its enchanting storybook visuals. This game features a variety of playable characters, each contributing to a dynamic gameplay experience.
Currently, players can choose from four distinct characters, each with individual Skills, Abilities, and movesets, which adds to the challenge of mastering them all. However, unlocking these characters is just as vital as learning how to play.
What Characters Are Available
At this stage, there are four characters to unlock. Rue, the starting character, is accessible right from the beginning. The other three characters—Rivet, Uma, and Isdra—must be unlocked through gameplay.
While each character possesses unique Skills and Abilities, they share access to the same Accessories and Support Skills. Moreover, permanent upgrades, such as those obtained from the Soulfire Prayer, are applied collectively, allowing you to enjoy progression without needing to upgrade each character individually.
Unlocking Each Character
Each character has different requirements for unlocking, meaning players will unlock them in a somewhat unpredictable order, typically starting with Rue, followed by Rivet, Uma, and finally Isdra. To switch characters, simply speak to them at the Shelter, as character changes are not possible during a run.
Here’s how to unlock each character:
Rue
Rue is not subject to unlocking—she is the default character provided at the game’s start.
Rivet
Rivet is likely the next character you’ll unlock. She is related to the Blacksmith you meet early in the game. After assisting him in establishing his forge, he hints at Rivet’s absence. Following this, there’s a chance you’ll encounter Rivet in one of the rooms in the first area, where she will assist you in battle. Defeat the enemies in her room, and she will return to the Shelter with you, becoming available for play thereafter.
Uma
To unlock Uma, you need to venture into the Lightless Forest (the second area of the game) and find her in one of the Mystery Rooms. In this room, Uma will always be accompanied by another character and an injured animal. To heal the animal, she requires five Equipment Material shards. After helping her three times with these shards, she will join your cause and return to the Shelter as a playable character.
Isdra
Isdra’s unlock conditions are a bit different. After bringing the witch located in the first area back to the Shelter following the construction of the Blacksmith’s forge, you also need to build her research station. From there, spend your Candles to unlock various research topics until you reach Ancient Ice Magic Research III. Once completed, Isdra will be available to play.
Playing as Different Characters
While the core mechanics remain the same across characters, their approaches and available upgrades differ significantly.
Rue is the fastest of the characters, utilizing a rapid five-hit combo along with swift knife throws. Her Skills generally have quicker cooldowns, albeit requiring Energy for use. The more Energy Rue accumulates, the more powerful her Skills become, making her an adaptable choice for both close and ranged combat.
Rivet, in contrast, is more technical and relies on resource management. She possesses a three-hit combo and a gun that automatically reloads, allowing for continuous ranged combat. Rivet’s Skills often modify her combo or enable turret construction, focusing her strategy on summoning turrets and maintaining distance.
Uma adopts a different style by acting as a Beastmaster, calling upon Woodland spirits to aid her in battle. Her short combo and nature blasts are augmented by a Summon gauge that fills with damage dealt. Skills that consume Summon can summon animals to fight alongside her, effectively increasing her damage output.
Isdra is unique in that she lacks a ranged attack and relies on a block feature to defend against incoming damage. Her set focuses on perfecting parries, which can negate damage and reflect it back. Additionally, she has a Frost Gauge that enhances her attack power as it builds up.
As you explore the world of Cinderia, mastering each character’s unique abilities will greatly enrich your gaming experience.
